White Columns Golf Club Review
by Todd Sentell
Since opening in November 1994, this exquisitely designed and maintained golf course has been one of Atlanta’s favorites. With its fun and captivating mix of holes, set along a rolling, heavily wooded topography, Tom Fazio’s creation immediately began winning awards. And now, White Columns is the most awarded course in the modern history of Georgia golf with accolades from a wide range of golf, lifestyle, and business publications such as Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, The Golfer, Aveda, Travel & Leisure Golf, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Atlanta Journal/Constitution, and Zagat Survey.
Setting up your Round: White Columns offers a range of green fees, depending on which day of the week you play. Daily-fee players can reserve a tee time with a credit card account number 6 days in advance by calling 770/343-9025. Keep in mind however, that White Columns is a highly maintained, semi-private club, and it’s reflected in the green fees. The playing surface superiority and level of hospitality, however, is ultimately worth it, especially if you’re using the club for high quality business or personal entertaining.
When you arrive: Heritage Golf Group, the owner of White Columns, employs bright and friendly staff members who practice an extraordinary service gesture. It’s called “no touch.” In other words, the only time you’ll touch your clubs is when you’re playing golf. The practice range has always been one of the finest in Atlanta golf, with even more incredible improvements planned beginning the summer of 2003.
Hole you will love: Whenever an Atlanta publication publishes a “Dream 18,” you can count on this hole’s inclusion. It’s the memorable, 235 yard, par three 17th. Visually and strategically, from every tee box, it’s the perfect hole. On the tee, you gaze at a long green, set diagonally, in a far away valley, with a creek and small bunker in front of the green and a larger bunker behind, and above, the green. The green itself is two tiered, so even if you find the green with your tee shot, you’ve got to work hard to get it home in two putts.
Hole you won’t: Of course, the 17th. As a White Columns regular, and even though this is a tough par, during the round you find yourself looking forward to the hole for the beautiful view and distinct challenge of making a par…that feels like a birdie.
Overview: Heritage Golf Group is quickly taking this hugely popular club from a semi-private status to fully private, and will eliminate all daily fee play once the transition occurs, which is anticipated to be during the first half of 2004. Under Heritage’s ownership, the golf course continues to be groomed to the extremely high standards White Columns’ golfers have always enjoyed. The club’s amenity package is also being enhanced, with construction underway on a new fitness facility, clubhouse expansion, and short game practice and teaching area.
